Under the leadership of the department director, assistant director, nursing supervisor, and/or charge nurse, the Lactation Education Specialist - Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for planning, directing, assessing and providing nursing care according to the policies and procedures of the hospital and department. Important dimensions of this position consist of quality of care, professional commitment, teamwork, interpersonal skills, safety, good public/customer relations and a broad nursing knowledge.
The Lactation Education Specialist - Registered Nurse is a team player who works closely with others, is flexible in dealing with changing priorities, and synthesizes clinical knowledge to solve problems. Must demonstrate professional development and clinical competency to provide patient education from pre-delivery through the post-partum stay in order to assess, develop and implement the plan of care and evaluate breastfeeding needs. The Lactation Education Specialist - Registered Nurse is an experienced registered nurse who shall provide in-service, orient new staff, precept students, provide informal and formal education programs for the Family Birth Center/Main West and IICN. Breastfeeding assessment and reassessment on all breastfeeding patients and support of at-risk breastfeeding mothers with early intervention to initiate and maintain adequate milk supply and focus on patient comfort and satisfaction is required.
At least 2 years acute care experience with a BABY FRIENDLY hospital inpatient lactation program and 2 years experience with a BABY FRIENDLY outpatient lactation clinic. Must also have experience with management and maintenance of the BABY FRIENDLY certification or similar process. Must have excellent written and oral skills; and demonstrate, facilitate and encourage teamwork.
Minimum of BSN or currently enrolled in formal BSN program or enrolled in courses that can be applied to completion of formal BSN program. MSN preferred. Membership in nursing professional organization related to assigned area of nursing preferred.
State of California RN license required. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS (required).
NRP required. Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification is required.
