Under the leadership of the Nutrition Services Director, the Clinical Nutrition "Manager" collaborates with the director in planning, goal setting, developing department budgets, and coordinating supplies/equipment, staffing, and care/service to carry out the responsibilities in an efficient and effective manner in conjunction with and support of Community Hospital’s strategic plan.
The Manager supports financial viability with attention on expenses, revenue, utilization and productivity in assigned cost centers, and tactical execution of Lean concepts. Program referrals, expenses and cash flow are monitored, tracked and compiled for reporting, as well as all expenses and required reporting for external endowment grants.
The Manager is responsible and accountable for managing the MNT Program (nutrition assessment, nutrition support, patient intervention and education) for inpatients at Community Hospital and Westland House, and outpatient programs located at Ryan Ranch and other outpatient locations. Assigned tasks include supervising the department’s daily operations, including but not limited to, being a resource and role model to staff for problem resolution with issues in patient care, service delivery, safety, supplies, equipment, computer software, and customer concerns.
The Manager assures that staff is scheduled to meet the needs of our patients and community, has the appropriate orientation/training and competence for the care/service provided, and that all staff adhere to Exceeding Expectations standards for professional conduct. This is achieved through supportive training, coaching, developing, evaluating staff performance, policy/procedure enforcement, and corrective action, if necessary.
The Manager plays a major role in supporting quality initiatives through ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, collection and analysis of quality and Performance Improvement (PI) data, assisting with development of future PI targets and quality initiatives, and development or revision of all clinical nutrition and department policies and procedures. Working with the director and clinical nutrition staff, the Manager develops, implements, and evaluates the department PI plan, and assesses and improves performance of care and services.
The Manager assures the following: Nutrition is represented at designated clinical and community committees, teams and workgroups (e.g., P&T, Forms, Community Health, KER, Computrition, IDG, Nutrition Support and other clinical teams); Nutrition employees are scheduled so that inpatients and outpatients receive MNT in a timely manner; Outpatients are scheduled in a timely manner and receive a quality education experience, with all information documented to successfully code and bill patients. This is achieved through interfacing and coordinating with other hospital departments (e.g. Patient Access/HIM/PBS) and outside entities (e.g., CHI/Aspire Health) to assure efficient, cost-effective programming.
- Three years of clinical nutrition management experience supervising inpatient and/or outpatient nutrition therapy programs in an acute care hospital, health system, or comparable health setting plus additional experience working as a hospital-based clinical dietitian, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience;
- Fluency; the ability to communicate orally, and the ability to read and write in English;
- Intermediate computer skills, including use of Nutrition computer systems, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and patient scheduling systems, etc.;
- Demonstrated experience exceeding customers’ expectations;
- Demonstrated teaching and/or public speaking experience for both staff and the public, including experience in mentoring, coaching and developing staff;
- Demonstrated program development experience;
- Experience in leading, inspiring and bringing out the best in a team;
- Demonstrated leadership, the ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Hiring preference for candidates with: both inpatient and outpatient nutrition management experience; experience and practical knowledge of registration, MNT billing codes, ICD-10, billing processes, etc.;
- Board Certified Specialist in pediatric or gerontological nutrition, advanced credentialing in areas such as adult and/or childhood weight management, Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) and/or experience with critical care/nutrition support.
Education as required for RD/RDN registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Master’s degree in nutrition, business or related-field is required.
RD/RDN registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required. Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
This position requires driving. In addition to a valid CA driver’s license, the following are required: Automobile insurance as required by the State of California with an acceptable driving record of three points or less, participation in the DMV pull-notice program, and an automobile available for daily work.
