Job Description:
The Palliative Medicine Service Nurse Practitioner functions under general Nurse Practitioner Standardized Procedure approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (CIDP.) The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides routine care and management of the patient with acute and chronic complaints, in collaboration with the supervising physician and through implementation of standardized procedures. The NP reports to the Service Manager and is responsible for working in collaboration with a physician, and other palliative care team members, in an active practice to deliver palliative care and related health care services to patients and families. The NP possesses skills and knowledge to provide excellent patient care, offers a high level of compassion and comfort discussing end-of-life issues and pain and symptom management to develop the patient’s plan of care. The NP will also educate patients and families in terms of services provided by Palliative Care and will provide education and in-services on Palliative Care, as requested.
Experience
Education and/or work experience in palliative care preferred. Must have excellent assessment, diagnosis and treatment skills, strong communication skills and be self-directed, motivated, and highly organized.
Education
As required for state of CA license as an RN and certified nurse practitioner. Master’s Degree in Nursing required- Exception Nurse Practitioners’ qualified or certified as a NP in California or any other state prior to January 1, 2008.
Licensure/Certifications
Must be currently licensed in California as an NP and be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners to practice in the State of California. Certification from either ANCC or AANP as a nurse practitioner. Current RN licensure and a registered professional nurse authorized in California to practice as a nurse practitioner in accordance with California law and be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized a national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners. A furnishing license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing and a current DEA number from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration for schedule II-IV controlled substances is required. Palliative Care certification required within two years of hire/transfer into the position. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS is required.
