Position Summary

The Pulmonary Wellness Specialist (PWS) reports to the THI Assistant Director - Cardiopulmonary Wellness and works as an integral part of the multidisciplinary Cardiopulmonary Wellness team.  Provides staff training and inservices for pulmonary services standards, processes and guidelines. The PWS oversees all care provided for pulmonary rehabilitation patients in the department including comprehensive assessment, individual treatment plans, evaluating patients response to treatment, education presentations/interventions and outcome measures. Assures that all regulatory guidelines are followed in patient selection, billing and documentation. Collaborates and communicates effectively with a multidisciplinary team, physicians, patients, and patients’ families for optimal patient and program outcomes.

The PWS conducts and oversees all pulmonary function tests and education assuring that ATS guidelines and other regulatory guidelines are followed for patient selection, testing procedures and documentation.  Oversees all aspects of ordering, handling, filling and management of liquid oxygen tanks and assures that supply meets demand in department.  PWS oversees and provides smoking cessation counseling services including patient education, communication with physicians, billing and clinical documentation.

The PWS performs all staff RCP duties when necessary.

Experience

Required:

Five (5) years or more experience in field of Respiratory Care, with one (1) year or more experience in acute care setting.   

Two (2) years or more in pulmonary rehabilitation, pulmonary education and/or pulmonary case management.

One (1) year or more experience in pulmonary function testing.

Understanding of pulmonary devices, oxygen delivery systems and pulmonary medications and demonstrates ability to instruct patients effectively.

Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Education

Graduate of a Respiratory Therapy program.  Bachelor’s degree in health field.  Advanced degree in health field preferred.

Licensure/Certifications

Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credential.

State of California Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCPs) license.

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.

Completion of Wellcoaches® training required within one year of hire.

Completion of AACVPR Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certification completed within one year of hire.

Smoking Cessation certification preferred.
