Job Description:

Under the leadership of the Chief Information Officer, the Director of Ambulatory and Montage Health System Applications is responsible for evaluating the organization’s business needs and determining how IT can align strategy with business goals to help determine, develop, and improve technical solutions for operational requirements. Must understand Epic Enterprise Solutions Architecture concepts across all modules to develop expertise of Montage Health’s IT offerings and how they can be used to meet the requirements of the clinical community. Ambulatory and IHN applications areas include Ambulatory Care, Epic Connect, Digital Health, Revenue Cycle, Population Health, Health Plans, and Training.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1.    Mastering of assigned application(s) and applied workflows including clinical, technical and operational

2.    Serve as a leader and resource in promoting the understanding, integration and application of information technology in healthcare settings

3.    Responsibility for assigned services, programs, departments, patient care centers

4.    Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services

5.    Coordinates and integrates service lines across the Montage Health Network (i.e., Medical Group and independent physician practices, population health, digital health, and health plans)

6.    Real-time point-of-care analytics, i.e., predictive models, campaign tools, documentation decision support

7.    Performance reporting analytics, used for managing to target.

8.    Leads the operational efforts of medical management with Healthy Planet

9.    Demonstrates effective relationships with medical staff and external customers.

10.  Promotes positive medical staff relationships

11.  Developing and maintaining an in-depth understanding of complex clinical, technical and operational workflows to properly optimize the assigned application areas

12.  Analyze current technologies used within the company and determine ways to maximize value

13.  Document and monitor requirements needed to institute proposed updates

14.  Propose and establish framework for necessary contributions from various departments

15.  Account for possible project challenges on constraints including, risks, time, resources and scope

16.  Work closely with project management teams to successfully monitor progress of initiatives

17.  Provide detailed specifications for proposed solutions

18.  Assist in defining clear goals for all aspects of a project and manage their proper execution

19.  Follow team standard operating procedures, polices, and use organization standard templates

20.  Mentor team members in evaluating and converting ideas and concepts into working solutions, with real and measurable improvements for the customer

21.  Provide feedback and overview of prospective solutions to manager for review and discussion

22.  Embedded in operational meetings and discussions to help scope and architect technology solutions

23.  Other duties as assigned

HIT departmental responsibilities

1.    Maintaining focus on customer service and responsiveness

2.    Selects, hires, develops, evaluates, and directs activities of directors, managers and/or coordinators of assigned departments/programs with operational unit chief executive.

3.    Develops and coaches’ leadership team to improve communication, teamwork, and operations between department, business units, and facilities as evidenced by administrative observation.

4.    Assesses, maintains, and improves staff competence, as evidenced by timely completion of hiring, orientation, competency evaluation, safety training activities and appropriate performance improvement plans to ensure highly competent staff

5.    Empowers leaders to communicate effectively, to resolve conflicts, and to work as a team

6.    Acts as liaison among patients and department heads (MD's, administration, etc.) to solve inter- and intra-departmental policy problems for assigned areas of responsibility.

7.    Develops, approves and periodically reviews with department managers' goals, budgets, programs and services of assigned departments/projects.

8.    Analyzes and approves capital expenditures within authorized budgetary and policy guidelines.

9.    Participates in Montage Health’s companies, service areas, and corporate committees as required.

10. Maintain fluency in HIT, Epic, and industry best practices, tools, applications, certifications and processes


Required Experience:

  • At least 10 years of working experience in one or more IT areas with a focus on Epic’s applications
  • Expertise in clinical and business subject areas and in the associated technologies that support and optimize the IT investment within each area.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Deep analytical skills - internal and external to HIT
  • Business analysis techniques and processes

  • At least 5 years of previous IT leadership experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Project Management
  • Epic EMR - Solutions Architecture
  • Clinical / healthcare operations experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, informatics, education, business, or information systems required. Equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline preferred.


Required certifications

  • Preferred: Epic application certification in corresponding application areas for job role as available (i.e. Cadence, Ambulatory, ClinDoc, Health Planet, MyChart, etc.)
  • Preferred: Project Management Professional Certification. If not currently attained, encouraged within 6 months of hire date.
  • Any additional Epic certification(s) required must be achieved within 90 days of completion date of course(s) and as required to support new versions.
